Demo 2010 reviewed by Corazine

The youngsters from Once Godlike have made a great effort with their 2010 promo. They're still in search of their final sound, and so this release goes off at a different tangent than their previous work (which used to be metalcore).
The band has hoisted the flag of death metal now, and the demo is peppered with sufficient rhythmic breaks and changes to sound strikingly modern. The five tracks are linked with horror-industrial samples, but the tracks themselves can create eddies of atmosphere too - kudos to the guitarmaestro. There's also some experimental juggling going on, but these little tricks are becoming more and more standard fare. The promo has some rawer edges as well: the production is a bit blunt (especially the drums) and at times, the aforementioned rhythmic twists feel too wooden.
But, as far as I'm concerned, this stuff is pretty solid and surely enjoyable. The twenty minutes fly by but you'll just press play again: it's metal without pretensions, and I like it all the more for that. But that doesn't mean Once Godlike has already arrived at their final destination or the peak of their abilities. Perfectionists always seek to improve. The attitude is already present, and time will bring musical splendidness from/for these guys.

Demo reviewed by RMP

Review score: 80/100

Author: Once Godlike
Album: Demo 2010
Date of release: 2010
Line up: Joeri, Jannik, Niels & Indy
Genre: experimental, technical death / black / doom metal
Recorded, mixed and mastered by Jack Studio

In 2006 the band started as a metalcoreband. Because of some line-upchanges they deceided to change genre and they discovered the amazing world of the Belgian black/Death metal!

Band:Once Godlike
Album:Demo
Label:Unsigned
Release:21/03/2010
Genre:Black/death metal

Review:

I first was surprised about the number of songs on the demo. One. Yes the demo concludes only one single song : Once Godlike, a 20 minute track.

I love the demo: why? There is a great proportion between the lyrical parts en the musical parts. The voices are nice tuned and in harmony, which gives the song a whole new dimension. Guitarriffs are brutal, hard and complementary, they fit amazingly well with the drumline and vocals.

I had a quick listen to their previous demo’s and they have made some good progress . It’s a band not to lose out of sight . If they’ll find their own style they can be a successful and powerful Belgian band.

Conclusion:

They’re in the good direction of making some very good music loved by many.

Demo 2010 reviewed by zwaremetalen.com

Once Godlike - Promo 2010
Eigen beheer, 2010

Demo 2010 reviewed by Lords of Metal

Once Godlike - demo 2010
Self-financed

file under Death metal / Grindcore

Neithan: Once Godlike is a Belgian band that started out as a dark metalcore act. Their last release, ‘Art Of Impact’, sounded like a mix between hardcore/metalcore and thrash. In 2008 the line-up changed: both guitarists, Kristoff and Stijn, left and were replaced by new guitarist Indy, and so the style changed along. It is now called black/ death experimental metal, but I don’t hear that much of black metal in the music, so let’s stick to the term “experimental old school death metal”.

It has been a considerable change of course and this demo is hardly to be compared to ‘Art Of Impact’: nevertheless I will do it anyway by saying that that previous release sounded more dynamic and band-like, so perhaps the new line-up (oh well, three out of four have remained within the ranks) still has to grow into the new style. It is a kind of simple, militant old school death metal with some mathematic riffs. In my opinion it is too monotonous and just a bit too familiar, and this style specifically would have been very fit for a band with two guitarists in stead of one, also to make the riffs sound more massive. It now sounds a bit shallow. A bit of Mortician, Six Feet Under, some old Obitus, add some black metal screams and experimental/mathematic riffs into it, put it in the blender and there you have the mix of the band’s status at the time of recording. This is quite a wide spectrum and as a result of that, the band sounds a little too much like all but lacks a soul of its own (and I don’t even refer to a typical own sound). The old school feeling is enhanced by the sound of the riffing (brutal) and the monotonous drumming: even if the band has a drummer of flesh and blood, it sometimes feels as soulless as a drumming computer.

It is an interesting concept, but there is a lot to be done if they want to impress this genre. Yet in no way I would suggest the band to call it a day when it comes down to this style: I think they recorded the demo a bit too early, because this style demands a lot. I do think that the band has possibilities, it is just that they are too impatient…

ONCE GODLIKE - Demo 2010

ONCE GODLIKE – promo2010
Self-released – promo2010

Like most bands these days, changes are something to be dealt with and put into something positive. Once Godlike started out as a hardcore-outfit and have evolved (because of some crucial line-up problems) to a more mature type of playing. They released an EP in 2007 which contained some heavy songs packed with memorable riffs but unfortunately they hadn’t caught much publicity then. 2008 was another milestone when two of the main characters left the band. The addition of new blood made them go into another direction, of which ‘promo2010’ is the first example. Technical dark metal (overlapping with doom/death metal) with a high passion for amorph riffing and a fascination for highly complex black metal. This promo isn’t something one can capture by just listening to it once, and they still keep surprising me with every listen.

The base for Once Godlike is deathmetal, with its stomping drums and over-the-top singing, but the band is truly all over the place. Very skilled musicianship with a taste for renewal is what they bring and they bring it for free! Fans of the earlier work can find a shot of technical melodic metal (Art of Impact) and fans of a more diverse sound packed with different impressions can gladden themselves with the new fine piece of strange and utter unique metal. Although this promo is a work in progress, they are obviously talented and eager to improve.

Once Godlike - Biography

Once Godlike is a band hailing from Mechelen, Belgium.
At the start (2003) we played a darker type of hardcore.
The line up till 2006:

Joeri - drums (In better days)
Kristof - guitar
Jannik - vocals
Tony - bass (Leng tch'e).

Once Godlike (2006): We evolved from hardcore to metalcore with deathmetal influences. A nice example of our sound is the 'Art of Impact' mcd (2007).
The line up till 2008:

Joeri - drums
Kristof - guitar
Jannik - vocals
Stijn - guitar
Niels - bass

Once Godlike (2008): Stijn and Kristof left the band and Indy joined. This fact meant another big change for Once Godlike. With this new line up we made the first steps into a more experimental death / black metal project. At the end of 2009 we recorded a five-piece demo which will be downloadable for free.

Current line up:

Joeri - drums
Jannik - vocals
Niels - bass
Indy - guitar
